Former skipper of Pakistan cricket team Shahid Afridi has announced conditional retirement from international cricket on Monday as a blot of gripe against the way he has been mortified by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
“When I took over, the Pakistan team was in the middle of the spot-fixing crisis,” a local newspaper quoted as Afridi said.
“Then the Zulqarnain Haider case happened, but my side fought both against England and South Africa in the ODI series. Then we beat New Zealand in New Zealand, and we got to the semi-final of the World Cup, and beat the West Indies there as well.
“But the way I’ve been treated, the future doesn’t look too good. I can’t play under a board that doesn’t respect its players. Because of this, under protest, this is a conditional retirement.”
31-year-old veteran all-rounder was swept by Misbah-ul-Haq last week without giving the rationalization of his relive. But it is whispered that PCB chief was dejected with his overtly denigration on team management.
Afridi had stern contests with Coach Waqar Younis over inclusions and exclusions of players in the squad for the last two ODI games against West Indies.
On his homecoming from West Indies, without christening any one said that everyone should stick to his own job and should not impede in other peoples work.
After which Pakistan cricket Board regarded this comments as ‘violation of rules and regulations’ and sent him a show-cause notice.
The chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Ijaz Butt consistently gave the comments against Afridi during and after his sacking.
Butt fortified the decision of Afridi’s sacking saying that there were “solid reasons” for his confiscation as limited over skipper that he will divulge later.
PCB chairman blamed that during the recent World Cup Afridi had started to take his captaincy for granted. Some players have also complained about adjustments and said that there is no chance for Afridi to regain captaincy.
Afridi made his ODI debut on 2nd of October 1996 against Kenya and his Test debut on 22nd of October 1998 against Australia.
