England asserted a dramatic triumph of an innings and 14 runs over Sri Lanka in the first test at Cardiff to abscond Lankan skipper Tillakaratne Dilshan in incredulity. English team strained Sri Lanka to bat on the final day after declaring on 496-5 for a 96-run lead but Chris Tremlett and Graeme Swann destroyed the guest batting in a blink of eye. Half of Lankan batsmen not reached into the double figures.
When the final day began in the harshly rain-exaggerated match everyone thought the match would concluded in a draw.
According to details English team resumed its innings on 491-5 on the final day.
The host skipper Andrew Strauss, gave Ian Bell 2 overs before the declaration, who was just 2 runs away from three-figure to complete his century despite the initiation of the day was belated already.
Nevertheless, Bell completed his hundred and Strauss called up his batsmen to declare the innings for 496-5.
Islanders just have to play the last day to stick a draw but dramatically Lankan batting line-up collapsed like pack of cards.
The prelude of the destruction of Lankan batting began in the first over when Chris Tremlett dismissed Tharanga Paranavitan for zilch.
Tremlett struck back barely in the next over to take the catch of Tillakaratne Dilshan (10) on his own ball. Strauss took his catch at slip cordon.
Tremlett removed Mahela Jayawardene straight away, to Strauss at slip again, and subsequently Swann bowled Thilan Samaraweera as he made to cut one that kept low.
Swann, in the subsequent over, removed Kumar Sangakkara (14), and Farveez Maharoof (0) to leave Islanders 43-6.
On the very first ball of next over, Tremlett nabbed the wicket of the century maker of first innings P Jayawardene for 14.
Rangana Herath yanked and was palpably lbw to Swann four for four at that stage.
Stuart Broad’s two back-to-back wickets of top-scorer Thissara Perera (20) and Suranga Lakmal (0) in 25th over, were enough bundling out Sri Lanka for 82 which is its fourth lowest total Test cricket.
Chris Tremlett and Graeme Swann claimed four wickets each while Stuart Broad snagged two Lankan batsmen.
The second Test in the three-match series will be start at Lord’s on Friday.
