After failing in the first captaincy assignment, England’s Twenty20 captain Stuart Broad, has blamed his batsmen for the shoddier 9-wicket defeat against Sri Lanka in the one-off T20 game played at the County Ground in Bristol on Saturday.
“We didn’t get enough runs when we batted and Sri Lanka showed their experience, they didn’t let us in.” Broad stated.
Lankan skipper Thilina Kandamby, won the toss and invited home team to bat, but expect Kevin Pietersen and Eoin Morgan who smashed 41 and 47 runs respectively, no English batsman can demonstrate effort against Lankan bowlers.
“We started off sluggishly and although KP and Morgan played fantastically well to get us back into the game, we lost all our momentum when they were both out,” 25-year-old broad said, who replaced Paul Collingwood to acquire the obligation last month.
The skipper asked its batting line-up to play with the responsibility.
With sparkling batting by veteran batsman Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara, tourists chased the target comfortably after losing the lone wicket of Saneth Jayasuriya.
Jayawardene smashed 72 runs off 57 balls striking 8 boundaries while Sangakkara cooperated finely with him, scoring 44 runs off 39 balls.
“We felt if we could get early wickets in their innings and put the squeeze on in the middle overs, that might be our best chance of winning the game, but they didn’t let us get near,” disappointed Broad said.
