Virender Sehwag says, debacles happens to every team
It was India’s eighth successive overseas Test defeat after they were humiliated in England last year with the same scoreline.
“If you look at even Australia, they lost the Ashes and were all out for 43 in South Africa. It happens to every team,” said Sehwag while speaking to media reports after the match.
“They (fans and media) should be upset with our performance, I agree. But this is the time fans should back team and players. This is the time we need support from fans and everybody should back their team,” he added.
On a question about the intensifying calls of the his senior team-mates, who all looked lackluster just like himself, to hang up their boots, Sehwag said it is entirely up to the individuals and the youngsters need to earn their spots.
“The retirement — that’s the team management and selectors would decide. It’s not me or anyone else would decide. If they think it needs to change, they would do it. If they want them to carry on and wait to see other players to perform, they would take the call,” he said.
“As for juniors, it depends when they get the chance to play Test cricket, only then they would do well.”
Sehwag also defended Coach Duncan Fletcher, who has failed despondently on two consecutive abroad tours.
“Fletcher is a good coach. He’s talking to a lot of batsmen, giving them inputs, making strategies…players have let the team down, not the supporting staff. They are doing everything, they are throwing to top 7-8 players. They are making sure players would perform,” he said.
