Shaun Marsh dropped from Australia one-day squad
The 28-year-old New South Wales southpaw looked lackluster during the 4-0 Test whitewash of India as he managed to score just 17 runs in six innings. He has been sent back to state cricket to retrieve the lost form.
“Shaun Marsh is obviously disappointed with his own form in recent weeks and is out of the side but remains in our thinking for the future while he works at state level as they say, class is permanent but form can be temporary,” chairman of selectors John Inverarity said on Monday.
The loss of Marsh became gain of Queensland batsman Peter Forrest, who is yet to make his international debut.
Struggling wicketkeeper-batsman Brad Haddin, who was under intense criticism due to below-par show behind the stumps and the bat as well in the recent-past, has also been axed from the 14-man squad. Uncapped Victorian gloveman Matthew Wade will replace him.
“Brad Haddin has come off a heavy program of Test cricket the workload for a wicketkeeper/batsman is rigorous and resting him for the start of the series will refresh him for coming international commitments while also giving us a chance to look at Matt Wade at this level,” said Inverarity.
Apart from Forrest and Wade, the other uncapped player in the squad is New South Wales all-rounder Daniel Christen.
Since pivotal all-rounder Shane Watson has still not recovered from the back-injury, no deputy of skipper Michael Clarke is named.
Off-spinner Nathan Lyon was not available for selection due to injury.
The tournament will get underway with the clash between Australia and Sri Lanka in Melbourne on February 5.
Michael Clarke, Dan Christian, Xavier Doherty, Peter Forrest, Ryan Harris, David Hussey, Mike Hussey, Brett Lee, Mitchell Marsh, Clint McKay, Ricky Ponting, Mitchell Starc, Matthew Wade, David Warner.
