Australia celebrates MS Dhoni's dimissal
The 28-year-old Tasmanian quick produced the career-best figures of 5-33 to skittle out India for below-par 173 in purist of 289-run victory target.
Earlier, inspired by the half-centuries of Peter Forrest (52) and Michael Hussey (59) Australia had posted 288-5 after they opted to bat.
Australia now have 14 points from five matches while India are second in the table with 10 points from five games. Sri Lanka have collected seven points from four matches.
Pace spearhead Brett Lee chipped in three wickets for 49 runs.
Skipper MS Dhoni (56), who recorded his third successive half-century in the competition, was the only batsman to show some resistances as five of Indian batsmen failed to pass double-digits.
Lee and Hilfenhaus made early inroads and removed in-form opener Gautam Gambhir (5), Sachin Tendulkar (3), Rohit Sharma (naught) and Virat Kohli (12) to leave India 36-4.
Dhoni and Suresh Raina (28) provisionally stopped the tumble of wickets and stitched up 46-runs before Daniel Christian edged latter behind the stumps.
Ravindra Jadeja (18) and Irfan Pathan (19) also served some time on crease with Dhoni but failed to make impact.
Earlier, Matthew Wade (45) and David Warner (43) got off to Australia a strong start with an 70-run stand in 13 overs before Pathan edged latter to Tendulkar in slips.
Ricky Ponting’s (7) miserable form continued as Zaheer Khan had the stand-in Australia captain caught by Pathan at deep mid-wicket.
Off-spinner Rohit Sharma captured Wade’s return catch to leave Australia 3-117 but Forrest and Hussey added 100 runs for fourth wicket to restore hosts semblance.
Both Forrest and Hussey fell to Pathan in the same over.
Christian (26 not out) and David Hussey (30 not out) put up 65 runs off just 36 balls as Australia scored over 100 runs in the last ten overs.
