
Nuwan Kulasekara jumping in air after dismissing Sachin Tendulkar
The half-centuries from Lahiru Thirimanne (62) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (51) and an array of contributions from others powered Sri Lanka to 289-6 after they elected to bat.
Seamer Thissara Perera then bagged four wickets for 37 and Nuwan Kulasekara claimed three for 30 to skittle out India for 238.
Around the tumbling wickets Virat Kohli (67) slammed his 20th ODI fifty and Irfan Pathan played the resisting knock of 47.
Pace spearhead Lasith Malinga suffered India a big blow on the very second ball of innings to claim stand-in skipper Virender Sehwag for blob, caught by Kulasekara in slips.
From the other end Kulasekara struck twice to perish Sachin Tendulkar (22) and Gautam Gambhir (29) in his alternate overs as India were slumped to 3-54.
Kohli and Suresh Raina (32) provisionally stopped tumble of wickets and put India in a well-built position with 90-run fourth-wicket stand before latter fell to pacer Farveez Maharoof.
Soon after Kohli, whose patient 83-ball vigil saw only two boundaries, demised to Perera.
Pathan lulled India by playing some sparkling shots but failed to get the sufficient support from the other end. Perera captured his popped return catch on the first delivery of 46th over to wrap up the game.
Earlier, skipper Mahela Jayawardene (45) and Dilshan got Sri Lanka off to a flying start and brought up the Sri Lanka’s fifty in the eighth over but slowed down progress thereafter.
The pair stitched up 95 runs for the opening partnership before felling in quick-succession.
Jayawardene caught at covers by Sehwag off Pathan while Dilshan, who slammed five boundaries and a six in his 72-ball knock, fell edged to gloveman Parthiv Patel off Ravichandran Aswhin three overs later.
Sri Lankan woes extended when Kumar Sangakkara (8) fell cheaply to Umesh Yadav but Dinesh Chandimal (38) and Thirimanne launched a strong recovery and restore Sri Lanka’s semblance by adding 71 runs for the fourth wicket.
Pathan dismissed Chandimal in 39th over but Thirimanne moved on the anticipation towards a whopping total and plundered another 49 runs in the company of Angelo Mathews (49 not out).
Ashwin eventually ended Thirimanne’s fine innings in 46th over. He hit six boundaries during his 62-ball vigil.
Mathews’ 37-ball cameo was studded with four boundaries and a six.
