Pakistan captain Mohammad Yousuf lashed out Shahid Afridi for his act of ball-tampering and believes Pakistan doesn’t need such incidents at this time of crisis.
“I don’t know why he did it but it brought a bad name to the country, the good thing is that at least he realised his mistake and admitted it. I hope he does not repeat it again. Pakistan cricket does not need such incidents,” Yousuf said.
Afridi received two suspension points after breaching the ICC Code of Conduct [changing the condition of the ball] during his side’s fifth and final ODI against Australia in Perth. Two suspension points in the code means a ban of a Test, two ODIs or two T20Is. As such, Shahid will miss Pakistan’s next two T20Is against Australia on 5 February in Melbourne and against England in Dubai on 19 February.
The charge was laid by on-field umpires Asoka de Silva of the Elite Panel of ICC Umpires and Paul Reiffel of the International Panel of ICC Umpires, third umpire Rod Tucker of the international panel and fourth umpire Mick Martell.
Afridi later pleaded guilty and apologised for his action but came under lots of criticism from former players around the world. Although Afridi – Pakistan T20 captain, will be replaced by former captain Shoaib Malik for the one-off T20 match in Melbourne on Friday.
