After a series win in New Zealand after 17 years Pakistan’s current captain Shahid Afridi has retained as captain for the national team in world cup. Out of 14 teams Pakistan was the only country who didn’t announce the name of captain even after announcing the world cup squad.
Chairman PCB Ijaz Butt said early to announce the captain on Friday and today they announced Shahid Afridi as captain of Pakistan team. Misbah Ul Haq is named as the vice captain for the world cup 2011 team. There was race between Misbah and Afridi for the captaincy and today Shahid Afridi is retained at its position.
Afridi is captaining the team over the last year. He was first announced as T-20 captain then after that he was given the charge of test and ODI cricket. After his retirement from test cricket he retained as captain for limited over cricket.
Current series win against New Zealand is the first ODI series win by Pakistan team for two years. Ijaz Butt travelled to New Zealand and said that after discussing the matter with management he is happy that every one is backing the decision of retaining Afridi as captain for the team. Pakistan is decisively leading the series 3-1. There is still 1 match to go between both sides.
