Zimbabwean all-rounder Elton Chigumbura has resigned as captain in order to concentrate on his own game. Brendon Taylor and Hamilton Masakadza are emerged as the strong candidates for the new job.
25-year-old Elton Chigumbura who has been in the firing line for loss of form, has since tendered his resignation although the board has not yet deliberated on it.
While talking to a local newspaper on Friday former skipper declined to make any comment referring all questions to Zimbabwe Cricket and said:
“I have thought long and hard about the job since my return from the World Cup and I have consulted my family and friends about it. While some still think I should have stayed on, others agreed with me that I needed to concentrate on my own game and let somebody else lead the team.”
Elton Chigumbura was appointed as the captain in May last year as replacing leg-spinner Prosper Utseya. Under the responsibility of captaincy the individual performance of Chigumbura suffered so much, he was also criticized for the bad performance of his team in the recent World Cup.
Chigumbura has scored 2557 in 123 ODI matches he has played so far. His international career also includes 6 Tests and 14 T20s.
